MEET THE ORCHESTRA

XUE SU | flute

Xue Su is the Principal Flute of Symphoria. Currently residing in New York City, Ms. Su performs regularly with the Metropolitan Opera and New York Philharmonic. During the 2022-23 season, she played as Guest Principal Flute in Rigoletto at the Met. In previous seasons, she has toured with the New York Philharmonic internationally. She has also performed as Guest Principal Flute and Solo Piccolo with orchestras including the Buffalo Philharmonic, Glimmerglass Festival, Princeton, Albany and New Haven Symphonies. She has worked with such renowned conductors as Bernard Haitink, Manfred Honeck, Jaap van Zweden, Alan Gilbert and Yannick Nézet-Séguin among others.

 

During the 2018-19 season, Ms. Su made her Symphoria solo debut with Music Director Lawrence Loh, performing Lowell Liebermann’s virtuosic Flute Concerto. Passionate about teaching, Ms. Su is involved in Symphoria’s Youth Orchestra Programs, while maintaining a private flute studio. She has also taught as a guest teacher at the Manhattan School of Music’s Orchestral Performance program and the Juilliard School Pre-College.

 

Her brilliant musicianship has been recognized by numerous international competitions. As a winner of the Yamaha Young Performing Artist Competition, Ms. Su performed for a 1,500 audience at the Music for All summer symposium. She was a prize winner at the National Flute Association’s Young Artist Competition, where she also received the award for Best Performance of the newly commissioned piece. Her other prize winning competitions include the Maxence Larrieu, Biwako, and Unisa International Flute Competitions.

 

Ms. Su holds a Master’s degree in Orchestral Performance from the Manhattan School of Music, where she studied with Robert Langevin as a full scholarship recipient. Previously, she studied with Brad Garner at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and the Juilliard Pre-College. Her other teachers have included Stephanie Mortimore, Renée Siebert, Randy Bowman and Guoliang Han.
